About Us
OUR HISTORY:
The Sheep River Health Trust celebrates its 15th anniversary in 2009. Originally called The Oilfields Foundation, it was established in 1994 at which time it received charitable status. The Foundation reported directly to the Oilfields Hospital Board of Directors, raising funds to purchase various equipment items for the Oilfields Hospital in Black Diamond and the adjoining seniors’ long term care facility, the Rising Sun Lodge. The group initially started as a loosely-knit women’s auxiliary raising funds through bake sales and other small funding efforts.

In 2004, with the building of the Okotoks Health and Wellness Centre, the Okotoks region was added to the Oilfields Foundation mandate. Then called the Oilfields/Okotoks Foundation, its territory encompassed Priddis and regions to the north west, Turner Valley, Black Diamond, Longview to the south, Okotoks and DeWinton to the east.
Today the organization is known as the Sheep River Health Trust. It provides funding for medical equipment and programs for the communities as outlined in the attached map. One of the areas of services of which we are most proud is the at- home care of patients allowing them to stay within their familiar environment. It is really a wonderful partnership with the families which allows clients to stay and loving support of their home.

"It was only recently that changes were made so things could be done in a more business-like fashion," said former board member and realtor Doreen Lewis. The Board meetings have grown from being a visit and a sandwich to organized monthly meetings with an Annual General meeting and a $300,000 fund-raising goal. An organizational vision, a three year business plan and by-laws are now part of this forward thinking and moving health trust.
